Wednesday, February 4, 2026
K. Aleks Schaefer has accepted the position of director of the Oklahoma State University Master of International Agriculture Program, pending consideration from the Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents. Schaefer will begin serving as interim director until the board completes its review.
Schaefer, an associate professor of international markets, trade and policy in the Ferguson College of Agriculture agricultural economics department, has spent the past four years at OSU. He previously served on the faculty at Michigan State University and the Royal Veterinary College, University of London.
“I hope to strengthen MIAP as a flagship international program,” Schaefer said. “I will work to expand experiential learning opportunities, deepen global partnerships and ensure that our students develop strong analytical skills and real-world international experience.”
MIAP has a strong reputation for preparing students to address global agricultural challenges, and Schaefer is grateful to help steer the program, he said. He also hopes to grow the program’s visibility and impact domestically and abroad.
Schaefer’s research interests include agricultural and food policy, law, economics, international trade and commodity markets. He focuses on how global shocks (such as climate change, conflict or regulations) impact food systems.
Schaefer earned his Ph.D. from the University of California-Davis. He also earned a juris doctor, the primary graduate-level law degree, from the University of Kansas.
“I’m particularly interested in connecting rigorous economic and legal analysis with real-world policy questions,” Schaefer said. “Then, communicating that work in ways that are accessible to students, policymakers and the public.”
