Science Communication Academy Objectives

The six sessions include Tailoring Your Communication, Working with Communicators, Practicing Interviews, DIY Communication, 3 Minute Thesis Preparation and 3 Minute Thesis Presentations. The materials provided are PowerPoints, activity sheets, discussion/panel guidelines and supplemental videos. Additional materials needed are space, food and guest speakers. The session breakdowns are listed below.

Session Breakdowns

Session 1 | Tailoring Your Communication

  • Participants will be able to define their target audience
  • Participants will be able to tailor their communication to their target audience
  • Participants will use less jargon in their communication

Guest Speakers

Members of the college communication office who have experience working with faculty members to produce communication pieces. Faculty members with experience publishing fact sheets and working with professional communicators.

Understanding Communication Professionals Panel

View a list of potential communication professional questions to get the conversation started.

Session 2 | Working with Communicators

  • Participants will know the role of communication professionals in science communication
  • Participants will be more practiced working with communication professionals to engage in science communication

Translating for the Public Panel

Session 3 | Practicing Interviews

  • Participants will learn appropriate interview behavior and preparation
  • Participants will practice being interviewed

Members of the college communication office, the host and cameraman of the state extension television show, an NPR affiliate reporter, and the host of the state extension gardening show.

Session 4 | DIY Communication

  • Participants will know how to maintain an online presence
  • Participants will know how to use available resources for developing science communication materials

A professor who teaches journalistic writing. A member of the university communication office specializing in design and branding. A member of the university communication office specializing in photography. A member of the university communication office specializing in videography.

Session 5 | 3 Minute Thesis Preparation

  • Participants will know how to create a 3MT presentation
  • Participants will create a draft 3MT presentation

A member of the university communication office specializing in design. Five faculty members with experience giving 3-Minute Thesis presentations gave example presentations.

Session 6 | 3 Minute Thesis Presentations

Participants will present their 3MT presentations to a public audience.

No activity sheet, but a script for the program is provided.
