The Bachelor of Science program in Biosystems Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. Our program has been accredited by ABET since 1950 under criteria for biological engineering and similarly named programs.

Program Objectives & Outcomes

Program Educational Objectives

Within a few years of graduation, Biosystems Engineering program graduates will become top professionals, managers or leaders in a wide variety of industries and organizations involved with biosystems engineering, where they apply discovery, problem-solving, and leadership skills for the benefit of their organization and the society at large.

Student Outcomes for BSBE Degree

Graduates of the program will have:

  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying  principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  • An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  • An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  • An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  • An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  • An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  • An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Achievement of these objectives is determined through student assessment in engineering knowledge, quality of work, communication skills, creativity, work ethic, knowledge of professional ethics, and project management. Student achievement in these areas is judged based on class performance, professional society involvement, and peer interaction. The final assessment of student capabilities is the senior capstone course, where students work directly with industry, government, and/or philanthropic sponsors to develop real-world technologies.

BAE Continuous Curricular Improvement Process

We work with members of our BAE advisory committee to determine the expectations of industry for our students upon graduation. Assessment is used to evaluate whether students have achieved these expectations and inform our continuous curricular improvement process. As part of this process, we meet at least once each semester to discuss student performance data, course materials, assessment tools & rubrics, and program modifications.

BAE Mission Statement

The Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering enhances the production and profitability of agricultural and biological products, and the conservation and management of natural resources through teaching, research, and outreach.
