Alumnus News

Dr. Bill C. Clymer was honored as a Distinguished Alumni during the OSU Ag Honors held on October 3.  Dr. Clymer exemplifies the spirit, grit, and leadership that define a true Cowboy.  A voice well known in rodeo arenas across the country as a rodeo announcer – sometimes echoing above bucking bulls from his own breeding stock – Dr. Clymer has built a legacy as a scientist, educator, entrepreneur, and rancher.  His career reflects a deep commitment to agriculture, a relentless drive for innovation, and an unwavering dedication to Oklahoma State University

Dr. Clymer began his academic journey at OSU, earning his B.S. degree in Agricultural Education in 1965.  He went on to inspire young minds as an agriculture instructor at Plainview High School in Texas before returning to OSU to pursue his Ph.D. in Entomology, with a focus on tick control in eastern Oklahoma.  His doctoral research played a key role in improving cattle production through innovative parasite management strategies, setting the stage for a remarkable career in veterinary entomology.

After receiving his Ph.D. in 1969 under the direction of Dr. D.E. Howell,  Dr. Clymer joined the Texas AgriLife Extension Service as a Regional Entomologist in Lubbock and later Amarillo.  There, he immersed himself in large animal systems, particularly beef feedlots, and began building his own cattle operation on 800 acres east of Amarillo – a seed that would grow into the expansive Clymer Ranch.

His entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to found Clymer Research and Consulting, a pioneering veterinary parasitology firm that conducted contract research for pharmaceutical companies.  Under his leadership, the company became a vital partner in developing groundbreaking livestock health products, including ivermectin, which revolutionized parasite control in the cattle industry.  Dr. Clymer’s work produced robust, field-tested data that accelerated product development and improved animal health outcomes across the industry.

His expertise and influence continued to grow when he joined Fort Dodge Animal Health, where he led technical efforts to advance products like Cydectin.  Not only did this innovation improve parasite control, but it also minimized environmental impacts—famously inspiring Dr. Clymer’s slogan, “Save the Dung Beetles, Use Cydectin.”  His work extended internationally, supporting projects in South America and Europe, and establishing him as one of the leading parasitologists in the global cattle sector.

While building an impressive scientific and business career, Dr. Clymer also pursued his passion for rodeo and cattle ranching.  Today, Clymer Ranch spans over 4,000 acres and is home to a thriving cow/calf operation and an elite breeding program for bucking bulls.  One of his bulls recently ranked among the top three at the National Finals Rodeo – further proof that Dr. Clymer brings excellence to every endeavor
