Checklist of the Hymenoptera of Oklahoma

Most families of Hymenoptera in Oklahoma are rather poorly known. Only the Formicidae (ants) and Vespidae (paper wasps and yellowjackets) have been studied in depth. The Mutillidae (velvet ants) and some of the very small families have been partially studied. Rearing of parasitic species has been limited mostly to some economic species of aphids and caterpillars and the alfalfa weevil.

 

The following checklist is based primarily on the most recent catalog of hymenoptera (Krombein et al., 1979) and the OSU Collection. The literature cited is mostly locally produced papers and others that were readily available. More extensive literature searches would certainly add many more species.

 

The checklist contains records of 62 families of hymenoptera known to occur in Oklahoma. Slightly over 500 genera and less than 1100 species are recorded. There are known to be over 17500 species in North America so these totals may be less than one - half of the species which actually occur here.
