General policies, student expectations, and rules of conduct in MIAP

General guidelines and policies for students in the Master of International Agriculture Program (MIAP) can be found in the OSU Graduate College Catalog. Students are required to be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) hours each semester to be considered full-time and if on assistantship, or nine (9) hours if not on assistantship. International students are advised to contact International Students and Scholars for specific enrollment regulations but ordinarily need to be registered for nine (9) hours each semester. Students are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA each term to remain in Good Academic Standing and require an overall 3.0 GPA to graduate. Students will be placed on Academic Probation if their current term GPA falls under 3.0 or they receive a UR grade in their thesis or formal report research (AGIN 5000). Students on Academic Probation are ordinarily ineligible for a tuition waiver if they hold a graduate assistantship. In addition, students receiving a UR grade in AGIN 5000 are required to be on a remediation plan with their Chair/Advisor in the following semester which spells out strict guidelines for retaking AGIN 5000 (or an alternative capstone such as AGIN 5102), including monitoring by the Director of MIAP of outputs and deadlines of the student. Students under a remediation plan who miss any deadline in their capstone course will be automatically failed (a UR or F grade) and asked to leave MIAP.

From time-to-time, students may need to take a leave of absence for various personal, professional, or family reasons. For MIAP students in Good Academic Standing, a leave of absence of up to one year will generally be granted without specific conditions, except for students writing a thesis who will be asked to provide a justification for their absence and a timeline for completing the thesis that is approved by the Chair/Advisor. MIAP students on Academic Probation will be granted a leave of absence of one semester only with reinstatement subject to return conditions and completion of a remediation plan specified by the Director of MIAP based on the specific circumstance of the student. Students on Academic Probation who do not apply for a leave of absence and let their enrollment status lapse will generally not be eligible for reinstatement.

As graduate students in MIAP, there is an expectation that students will conduct themselves as professionals. Students are expected to work and interact with their instructors and peers in a respectful manner and with open, transparent communication.

Specific expectations of MIAP students include the following:

  • In-person MIAP students are expected to attend each and every class and to promptly email their instructor if unforeseen circumstances prevent attendance.
  • All MIAP students are expected to complete their coursework on-time and communicate any difficulties with meeting deadlines to their instructor well in advance of these deadlines.
  • All MIAP students conducting capstone activities (creative component, formal report, or thesis) are expected to have regular meetings with their supervisor and to develop a schedule of deliverables and deadlines to track their progress. This schedule can be adjusted based on the mutual consent of the student and instructor, provided that communication about such adjustments is made well in advance.
  • A failure to meet course deadlines without prior communication with faculty can lead to serious consequences, including a zero grade for such assignments. For capstone courses, faculty have the discretion to give the student a UR (Unsatisfactory Research) for formal report/thesis work or an F for creative component work if any one or more deadlines is missed without prior communication.

All MIAP students are required to abide by the Oklahoma State University Code of Conduct  which highlights the standards in which Oklahoma State University students are to expected to comport themselves.
