This webinar looked at the impacts of drought on the economies of Harmon, Jackson, and Tillman counties over the last ten years. In addition, it identified the mitigating effect that disaster relief insurance provides to the affected communities. It covered how much loss in output and jobs was caused by drought, how much output and employment was recovered due to disaster relief payments, and which sectors of the economy were the most affected. Despite research indicating price premiums from adopting health management practices, adoption rates remain low. One survey reports that only 12% of Oklahoma producers participate in formal value-added production and marketing practices such as age and source verification. Extension Ranch Management Specialist, Dr. Eric DeVuyst discussed new research on how likely calf value-added management practices will pay off. Rangeland management requires cattle producers to maintain production while also remaining profitable. The invasion of Eastern red cedar is limiting grazeable land for cattle. Woody plant encroachment (WPE) combined with drought impacts and high input costs becomes expensive for cattle producers who are forced to supplement, destock, or both. Patch-burn grazing is based on understanding the interaction of fire and grazing. Come hear Dr. Hannah Shear discuss how patch burning can benefit Oklahoma producers.
