Despite research indicating price premiums from adopting health management practices, adoption rates remain low. One survey reports that only 12% of Oklahoma producers participate in formal value-added production and marketing practices such as age and source verification. Rangeland management requires cattle producers to maintain production while also remaining profitable. The invasion of Eastern red cedar is limiting grazeable land for cattle. Woody plant encroachment (WPE) combined with drought impacts and high input costs becomes expensive for cattle producers who are forced to supplement, destock, or both.
