Checklist of the Diptera of Oklahoma

The following checklist is based primarily on the most recent Diptera Catalog (Stone et al., 1965) and the OSU Collection. There are records of over 500 genera and 1200 species; a rather small number of the 17,000 or so species known to occur in North America. Literature records are from locally produced papers and others that were readily available. More extensive literature searches would likely add many more species. Many families of Diptera are poorly known in Oklahoma. Only the Culicidae and Tabanidae, of the larger families, can be considered well known.

 

Higher classification primarily follows that of the latest edition of American Insects (Arnett, 2000). Species are listed alphabetically under each genus. Synonomy mostly follows Poole and Gentili (1996) unless something more recent was found in the

literature.
