Meet Brandon Henriquez

When Brandon was young, he told his grandmother he would be the first in their family to go to college, and this May, he will make good on that promise.
During his time in the OSU Ferguson College of Agriculture, Brandon has connected with numerous people who have become mentors, supporters—and most importantly—friends. Learn more about Brandon's story and why he is First Gen Proud.

Say hello to Kyle Humphrey

For Kyle, family is more than blood. After the loss of his mother, he found encouragement to attend OSU from his adoptive guardians.
Being a first generation student has motivated Kyle, and he's worked hard every day since he came to OSU. As a biosystems engineering major and a member of the OSU Rodeo Team, Kyle is proud to be the first in his family to walk across the stage as a graduate of Oklahoma State University.

First Gen Proud Stories

Areli Villalobos
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Areli Villalobos is a first generation student and future medical doctor. When her parents immigrated from Mexico to the United States, they set out to make a better life for their children — something Areli doesn’t take lightly.

"My parents always instilled in me how important education was, because they wanted to give us a better life than the one that they had. I want to succeed and make sure their sacrifices were worth it."

Noah McGinnis
Agricultural Education

As a soon-to-be teacher, Noah McGinnis understands the importance of education, and being the first in his family to graduate from college has motivated him to succeed.

"Being a first generation student is one of my biggest motivators. Some people said I couldn't make it, but it's nice to know I did it. I've made it this far and I can see the end. I'm really proud of that."

Avery Cluck
Agribusiness

For agribusiness student Avery Cluck, being a first generation student has proven to herself that she can do hard things. That’s why she is #FirstGenProud.

"Figuring out how to handle college was tough, but at the same time, I feel way more accomplished because I figured it out on my own. No matter if your parents went to college or not, you can do this."
