Horticulture Major

Horticulture combines the science, artistry, business and technology used to produce specialty crops for food and environment beautification. Student learn sustainable practices with hands-on hydroponics, vertical growing systems and gain experiences related to plant production, maintenance, business practices and client relations.
Options: Horticultural Business, Horticultural Food Safety, Horticultural Science, Landscape Management, Public Horticulture, Turf Management  and Urban Horticulture

Real-World Experience

Hands-on laboratories are included in many courses, and students in the department have the unique advantage of utilizing The Botanic Garden at OSU and the Water Conservation and Irrigation Training Center. Additionally, all students in the department are required to complete an internship prior to graduation.

Greenhouse Learning Center

The new Greenhouse Learning Center allows students to be active participants in the $14 billion national horticulture industry. Here, they learn real-world management and propagation of plant materials in a state of the art facility. Each greenhouse is independently climate controlled using an automated micro-grow greenhouse system that continuously monitors conditions like temperature and humidity.

Graduate Student Opportunities 

The Department of Horticulture and L.A. Department at Oklahoma State University is seeking applications for an MS student to start in summer 2025 or fall 2025 and a PhD student to start in fall 2025 or spring 2026. The MS student will work with biochar in the greenhouse and field production, while the PhD students will join research efforts involved with controlled environment plant production. The fellowship includes a competitive stipend and tuition waiver. Applications should be submitted to the Graduate College, and should include a letter of interest, a CV, academic transcripts, GRE and TOEFL (if applicable), and three letters of references.
